Baselworld is now officially popping off for smartwatches and US watch brand Nixon has joined the party with its new super-water resistant Android Wear debut The Mission.
The Mission – yes that’s its name, like The Edge from U2 – is the ultimate adventurers’ smartwatch, offering water resistance to 100m, encasing the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 chip inside a polycarbonate and stainless steel, covered with Gorilla Glass.

The looks are reminiscent of the Casio Outdoor smartwatch, and many of the features are similar, too. A bevy of onboard sensors deliver information such as tide times and snowfall, and Nixon has partnered with Surfline and Snocountry for bespoke apps and Trace to handle activity tracking. The Casio is only water resistant to 50m, but does feature military grade dust and shock resistance. However, the Nixon can take the crown for the deepest diver of the current smartwatch crop.
However, The Mission doesn’t capitalise on the Casio’s lack of GPS, which does feel like a missed opportunity.
“All of our watches have to meet a high standard of durability and water resistance and for many of these participants, a fragile smartwatch is useless,” said Tyson White, vice president of product at Nixon.
While it’s a serious piece of smartwatch, buyers will also be able to customise Nixon’s The Mission look with a selection of clip on coloured casings, and a selection of watch faces mirror the company’s line up of analogue watches is available on the analogue display, which is a nice touch.
No word on price or availability yet beyond “end of 2016”, but we will be looking to get hands on with The Mission at Baselworld, which is shaping up to be an absolute smartwatch fest.
